 My New Arrival!

My impatient wait is over! Phew! But it was well worth the wait.

UPS delivered this package to me a couple of Friday's ago…

Smaller than I had anticipated, I carefully began to open the box. This stage, or at least the careful bit, was new to me, as I usually hack away at the packing to reveal my new purchase as quickly as I can manage, but I was going to enjoy this, its part of the fun right?

The first glimpse of the case inside…ooh the tension

What is it? I hear you cry

Yes, a Genuine Peli Case. But what lurks inside this case??????????

UTS Precision Instruments and a UTS Professional Diver 500.

My first impressions are very positive indeed, but lets look at some areas in particular.

The Case. A genuine, waterproof Peli case. This is a tough plastic case, perfectly in keeping with the style and function of the watch itself. Tough and well constructed. A nice change from the usual choice of wooden or leather designs of most manufacturers. Inside there is a home for the watch itself, an additional strap, spare links & pins and of course the instructions. All held firmly in place with high-density foam inserts and cutouts. Cool

The Bracelet. I ordered this watch with the addition of the UTS Diver Bracelet. I simply cannot get along with a rubber strap. Although I believe the bracelets used by UTS are out sourced, the quality of it is excellent. As it is a weighty, solid link, brushed stainless steel it is a perfect compliment for the watch case. The clasp is a simple deployment style with twin button release, but is substantial in its construction. There is a divers extension housed within the clasp too which is a nice inclusion. I particularly like the swirl effect on the inside of the deployment. All removable links are screwed for security and convenience.

The Watch Case.
Brilliant, Simply Brilliant! The single best case I’ve handled. It is a superb piece of engineering, tough yet finished sublimely. The fit and finish is perfect, but it does have an angular feel to it that some may find a bit too rugged, but I personally enjoy. The case has the feel of a precision piece of aircraft engineering rather than a piece of jewellery. There is a 3mm flat sapphire crystal with AR coating to protect the dial. The case back is screwed into place with 6 small hex screws proving the WR to 500m – although all UTS watches are tested beyond the advertised WR level. The 24mm lugs are fully removable from the case, again released by removing the 2 two securing hex screws with the special tool that supplied as part of the package. I am unsure of the reason for this particular design, but could see an advantage of being able replace the part individually should they get scratched or damaged.

The Bezel
I was a little unsure about the bezel design, or to be more accurate the width of the bezel itself and therefore the reduced size of the legible dial. However, having had the watch for a couple of weeks now, I have grown to like it. The bezel uni-directional and spins round in 60 very satisfying, well-defined clicks. I believe the bezel, like the case, has been designed and engineered entirely in house by Mr Nicolaus Spinner online casino at UTS.

The Dial & Hands
Simple and functional, white on black. Easily legible with nothing to distract your eyes from the time. A date aperture at 4:30 might be too small for some failing eyes to read (!) but I manage fine

The Lume
The lume is strong when charged but does take a while to charge up. It holds up for a good length of time thought and fares well against most other watches. Seen here inbetween my new Lum-Tec M17 (this watch has a smoked crystal!)

The Movement
ETA 2824-2. A reliable and trusted movement. Handwinding, Hacking seconds and quickset date make it simple to use and robust, ideal for the Diver 500.

The Crown
Beautifully solid screw down crown. Nicely proportioned with deep grooves make it easy to operate and wind. UTS etching on the polished top finishes the job nicely.

The case measures 43mm across, 46mm with the crown. Lug to lug is approx 52mm and the height of the watch is 13mm. I find the sizes comfortable for my 7in wrist and due to the lug design it hugs my wrist nicely.

Customer Service
Excellent service from initial contact right through to delivery of the watch. I particularly like the fact that emails are responded to by UTS founder Nicolaus Spinner. Not only does he build all the watches himself, he finds time to respond to my stupid questions and queries! The watch was shipped was from Germany direct from the factory and I was able to track the parcel every step of the way via the UPS website. I cant fault the UPS but at about £40 for this shipment from Germany it is not a cheap option.

The entry model in the UTS line up is a fantastic watch. It will definitely be a keeper for me. In the UK UTS seem to be somewhat unknown, but anyone who is looking for a superbly built, reliable heavy-duty tool watch should certainly consider UTS. Build quality, in my opinion, surpasses that of other brands costing multiples more. There is no in house movement with numerous complications, but instead a tried and tested movement from ETA. The case is simply a great piece of engineering, maybe not to everybody’s taste but the quality cannot be questioned. I will certainly be looking at other models from UTS, and I will not be selling this one – that speaks volumes from a self-confessed flipaholic!!
